Ancient Information of Bandaragama Area

There are many historical theories associated with the name Bandaragama. The name Bandaragama is said to be derived from the village where the treasuries of the Raigam Bandaras or a king before or after the Raigampura Kingdom were located.

  • It is said that the village where the treasury of the ruler of Raigampura, the treasury of Raigam Bandara was located was Treasury> Bandaragama.
  • It is said that the village of the Bandaras was> Bandaragama as it was the family name of the Raigam Bandaras.
  • Warehouse because of the village where goods were collected in several puzzle villages It was Bandaragama.

This area has many ancient shrines and lakes.

Kingdom of Raigam

Kingdom of RaigamHistoric city of Raigam BC 307 up to the reign of King Devanampiyatissa Runs. 

Although vestiges speak of times dating back to the first century BC or even 30,000 years ago, the first mention of a Kingdom of Raigama is found during the reign of the Gampola Kingdom. Faced with invaders, King Buvanekabahu V sought to fortify the regions with the appointment of a sub-ruler in Raigama, Alakeshwara of Alagakkonara ancestry.

A descendant named King Veera Alakeshwara also ruled the region from Raigama. Remains of his palace and its colossal clay-ironstone (kabok) fort today lie at the grounds of the Pathahawatte Pushparama Viharaya.  

Weedagama Raja Maha Viharaya

Weedagama Raja Maha ViharayaThe temple where Ven. Veedagama Maitreya Thero resided is known as Veedagama Maha Maitreya Temple.Antiquities that have inherited an ancient culture can be seen in the Veedagama temple even today.There are no remains of ancient buildings that can be attributed to the historical period. However a few stone columns, Sandakada Pahana (moonstones), Korawak Gal (balustrades) have been unearthed from the site

These are the antiquities found in the temple grounds.

  • A moonstone with only a lotus flower carved on it
  • A gold statue about 3 inches high
  • A bronze statue of a soldier
  • Different types of coins
  • A 2-inch sword and shield

Sri Sudharmarama (Weeragaha) Temple

This temple is located on the Panadura - Horana road about 5 km from Bandaragama towards Panadura. Born in a foreign country and returning to Sri Lanka, Ven. S. Mahinda Thera, a Tibetan, visited this temple and for about fifteen years spread the light of Dhamma throughout the whole of Ceylon based on the village of Mahabellana and this temple.
